“Friday Night, No Work, High Heels, Minni Skirt….”

Oh forgive me my fellow B Foundation crazed maniac fanatics, for I have sinned and am 2 weeks….I know…..late on posting this epic blogski about this little band, that is kind of a big deal, and pretty much rocks my socks off every time I see them. Of course I am talking about The B Foundation on the Spring Harvest Tour!

Now some may think I am crazy, and some may call me a groupie (haha lies, lies LIES!), but in reality they are just jealous because I sacrificed my wallet and multiple hours of sleep and sanity on the open road to see not one, not two, NOT THREE, but FOUR of these rocking showcases of new and old songs from these four fine gentlemen. So the only way to go about this is to jump in head first and just GO!

Bottom of The Hill, opening night!

A short 4 hour drive, after literally RUNNING the last two blocks home from class, and I was in beautiful San Francisco with my bFff ready to rage yet again with the band that allowed for our crazy gypsy and harlot selves to become the epic dynamic duo that we are. After the most entertaining cab ride I’ve ever experienced in my life, it was off for opening night with these four crazy cats. After going boom boom boom and getting an affirmative WAY HO from Mr. Moorehead we found out that if you wake Pat up in the morning he’ll give you some attitude, and if you wake him up at night (without a rogue sleeping bag) he will do the same. Then we were introduced to the new addition to our favorite foursome. It’s safe to say that Joe Fik has received the Emily and Courtney stamp of weirdness approval :)

Now for the show….can I say….EPIC! Since the set list was the same for the tour, I will slowly reveal the greatness (of which I can recall) in bits and pieces…just to get the full affect through each and every sweaty awesome detail of these shows. OPENING with “Deer Park and Madison” the show was off to a good start. With a new female majority crowd of crazy moshing B Found fans, Pat saranaded, Jason slapped the bass, Ian banged on those drums and Joe shredded his way into all of the hardcore B Found fan’s hearts.

Then it was on like donkey kong, because the normal set of mixing the soft with hardcore kick ass songs was out and the new heavy punk rockin’ set began with songs like “The Cure,” “Rincon,” “Say it in Sin,” and many more that are escaping my thoughts as of this moment in time. And in true fashion of a real live touring band, the boys even played their brand spankin’ new song “Weekend Warrior,” which is no reggae party…no….this is a PUNK ROCK PARTY! ~enjoy~

There were of course the other random moments of greatness that could be added to our bFff list of B Found memories, like seeing a lovely Blink 182 tat on a certain drummer’s ass, having a lovely convo on what the best strategy would be to navigate through San Francisco, a legit chick fight, hiding behind the tiki, and “helping” pack up the trailer. haha oh goodness….

SANTA CRUZ 3/31/11

Since it was Cesar Chavez day and I had all of my Friday homework done, I figured the only logical thing to do would be to take a detour on my way back to SLO (since my bFff decided to go see the Sharks instead….LAME) and see the same rocking kick ass show just one more time….obviously that IS the only logical thing to do. So after a quick hop on the 17 it was round #2 at the Catalyst Club. With the raging melodies of “Bellyfloppin,” and “Dirty Girls” this new gem of greatness, that seems to go by the name of “Claude,” is yet another glimpse of the more heavily favored ROCK turn that The B Foundation seems to be taking. Personally, I agree with this newer ROCKING transition 150%….because, hello…it’s f***ing SICK!

ps…I know that this video is from the Sactown show, I just didn’t have my cam on me for Santa Cruz, and call me crazy but, without a camera there is less pressure to capture those rock star moments, and you can actually enjoy the show…which is exactly what I did :)

Now…for the best show of the California leg of the tour…well just because it’s my town bee-otch….

With the excuse of signing next years lease (because that’s right, the freaky gypsy + harlot duo is rooming together next year…be afraid be very afraid) Emily and I were reunited for the lovely round three with The B Foundation. After skipping out on the last hour of my English lecture about William Bradford and Anne Bradstreet, half of an OG Cranberry Lemonade FourLoko, and a rickety ride in a 3 person truck we were at SLObrew and ready to rage yet again. Even though the crowd wasn’t huge, the people who were there definitely were the hardcore ones who made the night one for the books.

Emily and I did have a flip cam on hand to film our ridiculousness, and to also document the greatness going down on stage for the world to see, but it turns out that there are some technical difficulties in loading that footage from the flip cam onto the computer….I blame Emily haha

There was so much good stuff on there, like the boys crushing “Too Damn Tough,” “Baby Jane,” us bFff’s dancing around like only we can to Katastro (hahaha), and even a special post show acoustic saranade of OUR song “Ain’t Coming Home Tonight,” with the sweet stylings of Pat Stevenson, accompanied by Emily Beckwith, Courtney Schenkl and Joe Fikany on vocal guitar solos.

BUT, although I can’t show you, I was able to cross off an item from my bucket list:
-> “Dance on stage WITH one of my favorite bands”
….little did I know that this bucket list item would be as descriptive as “booty bump with Jason on stage with The B Foundation during ‘Take Some Time’.”

If that flip cam footage never comes out, that will always be a “click” mental picture that still makes me laugh :)

Another thing that makes me literally LOL is the great tale of the onsie pajamas. I am the usual one dawning the epic pink footies with multi-colored hearts at our super duper fun slumber parties; but this time, Joe brought it to a whole new level….here is the #1 reason why we <3 the new guitar hero….it’s proof that he is weird enough to hang out with us!

And since Joe was getting ready for The Roxy show by dancing around in my onsie pj’s, Emily and I figured that we should sign that lease and have an epic bFff little mini road trip to good ‘ol Hollyweird to see these crazy kids just one more time….

After some ICE CREAM ICE CREAM! NIJA HIGH SCHOOL NIJA HIGH SCHOOL! ANGRY TIGER GRRRRRRR! We put down our wtf moose antlers and were back in a familiar place of dancing, raging, head banging, spinning sing-a-long fun with The B Foundation. And this fourth round of fun can be crowned and capped off with my favorite of the new songs that closed the set (before encores) “INDO ADDICT.”

How can you not love this song. It’s one of those songs that induces a spontaneous need to (if you are a girl) take your hair down and bang your head, all while spontaneously whipping out the mystical air guitar to rock and rage along to the hypnotically rocking melody. Sorry, I can admit that I am 100% completely biased when I say that this is one of the best B Foundation songs of all time….I LOVE it….LOVE LOVE LOVE and cannot wait for them to record it, along with all of their other new tunes of punk rock greatness so that I can pop it in my ear buds and escape into the alternate reality that The B Foundation’s tuneage always seems to bring me to.

Dear Jason, Pat, Ian and Joe,
You are all totally awesome!
I <3 you lots.
Thanks for all the memories, laughs and silliness that always seems to go hand in hand with a B Foundation tour :)
Courtney :)

“C” is for “Cover Songs” and The King of Cover Songs is Cris Cab!

March 23, 2011 § Leave a comment

I’m sorry Kanye, but this kid just murdered your song!

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you someone that I see nothing but big things for; Cris Cab! On good ‘ol twitter, I saw for a good like 3 or 4 months that somebody (not going to name names lolo haha) was posting “Black and Yellow” over and over again. Personally, not thanks, that song annoys the hell out of me. So, stubborn Courtney refused to click on the link because I thought “this Wiz or whatever he calls himself doesn’t need me to add to his views count on youtube, so no, I will not click this link!” Little did I know, it wasn’t the Wiz character, it was this brand spanking new artist Cris Cab!

A little bit of reggae, and a whole lot of soul and raw energy, this Miami native is a force to be taken seriously! He has a way in both of his covers (which are quite the youtube sensations now) to take the song form each respective artist, and work it so that its the same song and you can sing/rap along as you normally would, but he adds positivity and good vibes to it. No longer do I have to hear about “bitches” because this young man lived up to the gentlemen exterior and changed it to ladies :) good kid right there!

But seriously, how can you not love an acoustic guitar, horns, and the spirit of Miami in a song? You can’t not love it!!!

Keep up the good work Mr. Cab! Can’t wait to hear the next cover!!!!

ps….a good like 800 views are probably thanks to me and my friends who have been obsessively watching the video I posted on fbook….hahaha YOU’RE WELCOME!

Song of The Day!

March 21, 2011 § Leave a comment

Getting criticism from some (douchbags) for sounding too similar to the crazy little punk band that goes by the name of Green Day, I say…F all those hating losers! This song is amazazing!

My favorite track, hands down off of their new album Postcard From Paradise, The Supervillains are freaking awesome! And if you know me, you know exactly what my favorite part of the song is….hahaha

It’s one of those parts when you just make a goofy face, some arm gestures to get into the rastaman mood, and shout out in your deepest “eh brah” voice possible “WELL I’M STUCK IN THE MIDDLE, IN THE MIDDLE I’M STUCK!”

Yup, just from that part of the song, I was hooked :)

So enjoy The Supervillains awesomeness that is currently blasting through my headphones! Love this band, and love love LOVE this song :)

“Never Trust a Fool That You Never Said a Word To…”

Well, here I am again, and still quite confuzzled by this band. As a follow up to the post I made about the leaked song “Miss You” by The Holdup, this post is dedicated to the new gem of awesomeness that they have put out called “Looks Is Deceiving.”

I LOVE THIS SONG!!! Mostly because it speaks to the rasta, grooving, hair shaking part of my soul that always shines when a sick reggae track caresses my eardrums…ahhhh so nice :)

If the world of hip hop and the world of reggae were to have a baby, this song would be the lovechild. It is just amazing. But again I am left totally confused by The Holdup…

The majority of their songs hit the more poppy sound than reggae, and if you were even to ask them how they would classify their sound, they would say pop….but this my friends is not pop! Not in any form of the word! Pop is Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, artists who secretly whisper sex and the truth about relationships and the cycle of love into their lyrics….The Holdup DOES NOT DO THAT!

Mr. Garmany’s whinny lyrics perfectly fit into the weird (good weird, not bad weird) world of reggae, their lyrics don’t try and nicely say how a boy’s mind works. Their honesty, catchy lyrics, and (HELLO) reggae vibes have put them into a category that they just can’t get out of! YOU ARE A REGGAE BAND! In every song you can hear hints of Mr. Marley’s steevy melodies, hypnotizing dub beats, and all around positive energy…well as long as the song isn’t centered at saying F YOU to an ex.

So, in conclusion to my Holdup rant of the century trying to figure out what type of mythical musical monster they are, I am still confused. If those boys ever get out of the reggae business, it will be a sad day for the world of reggae! They have that unique interesting extra something to keep us fans on our feet. Their melodies and lyrical masterpieces are the perfect thing to not only expand the image of reggae music to more than dreadlocks and weed, but they also keep all of our musical bubbles open to expand.

Expand so that they don’t get boring and stagnant listening to the same song over and over, just mixed differently by different bands. Expand so that the reggae souls wandering this world can give pop a second chance, and so the anti reggae people out there can give reggae another chance. EXPAND!!!! Expand your minds, and keep them open so that if you are stuck in a rasta bubble you can give a new genre and new sound another chance and vise versa for the anti-reggae generation.

I love The Holdup…but they still keep me completely confused….literally, I think this new album (Still Gold, out on iTunes on April 26thd) is going to be an epic orgy of every single genre in music; creating something that we have all truly never heard before.

Keep on Keepin’ on and producing amazing tracks guys!…but can you just pick a genre? haha or at least the “majority” genre so that I can explain what the F you are to people with a little more intelligence? Because as of now the convo goes:

“What is The Holdup’s sound all about?”
–“To tell you the truth, I have no clue…but they’re awesome!”

“So When You’re Gone Baby I’m Not Gonna Miss You, I’m Not Gonna Miss You”

March 3, 2011 § Leave a comment

Oh break ups…where would musicians be without the cycle of puppy love, world war three epic fight, then the “F you” break up song? This my friends, looks to be the end of the cycle for The Holdup.

“Miss You” wasn’t the exact song I was looking forward to them releasing as a preview of the upcoming album due out in late April, but it is slowly growing on me. Looping in with their signature dubby sound, and then blending in their lead singer’s uniquely whinny vocals, this song is literally THE break up song.

It really does speak the truth for both sides of the relationship (or in this case relation-shit…Dane Cook reference lol). If you find yourself with one of those guys/girls that just isn’t right, but you try and make it work because you think its just rainbows and gumdrops, it ALWAYS ends up like this!

I still can’t really decide what exactly The Holdup is. Well I know that they are a band (duh) but what can I really say about their sound?
Some songs you listen to and you are like oooh yeah, thank you for these dub sounds and reggae vibes; but then others you listen to (like this one for instance) and you are just left puzzled. So I guess really you just have to approach listening to The Holdup like the beginning of a relationship.

You find that first song that you know everyone with love, “Summertime Baby,” as your initial encounter.
You fall into “like -like” with the song, and immediately get to social network creeping…ie facebook profile, youtube, ect. (don’t lie to yourself now, we ALL go straight to facebook and snoop around at pictures and everything…let’s be honest!)

You listen to more songs, kind of like a first date, and then you can make your own opinion of them.

Because seriously, I think they are an extreme band; you are going to either LOVE them (I <3 them) or you are going to be wishy-washy stuck in the middle and not completely convinced. So I encourage you all to give them a chance. They are new, they are a mix of literally everything you could think of, and I am positive that no matter what, you will find at least one song that applies to your musical bubble best :)

Check ’em out at facebook and find that song that tugs at your musical heart strings and start your little romantical musical journey with The Holdup :)

Well, They’re Obsessed With Success…And They’re Kind of A Big Deal

February 28, 2011 § Leave a comment

Who am I talking about you may be asking yourself right now, the answer to that question my friends is very simple: THE B FOUNDATION!

This weekend was so dubby and raging that I cannot even begin to describe it! But I think I will start with night number one of the Winter Blackout Tour in San Luis Obispo with my bFff Emily (duh).  Despite the rain, and cold, and very very VERY anticlimactic cheese quesadilla this show was going to be completely bonkers, and I would like to think I had a part in it :) See I may have suggested some awesome songs that should really be on the set list, and most of them made it on there and The B Foundation had the most ROCKIN’ show I have ever seen! But I’m getting ahead of myself because I totally and completely forgot about The Holdup.

Opening up the show, the San Jose natives looped in their dubby sounds and lit up the blacked out crowd with all of their big songs like “Alone With You,” “Summertime Baby,” “Good times,” “Drunk Texting,” and the song of the weekend “Obsessed With Success.” That song was on repeat all day and all week leading up to the show, and after this weekend (especially after hearing all of the silly remixes) I can say that my love for “Obsessed With Success” has been consummated and we need a little break. Other than that all of The Holdup’s songs were fantastical…just like they sound on the cd, and they definitely put on quite the rockin’ show :)

The Holdup :) "Alone with you, alone with you, kiss you on your neck baby that's all I want to do"

Now I know that this tour was a headlining Expendables show, but The B Foundation was who I was most stoked to see. I just love those four so much and just have so much respect for how much time they dedicate to their craft.

Even Justin Bieber showed up to see The B! lol

Drumroll now people…because I am about to go crazy in telling all of you lucky souls about how AMAZAZING The B Foundation’s set was; and I think all I have to say for the die-hard B fans to understand the epic-ness of this show is “they opened with ‘The Cure'”! Yeah, I know, I was beyond stoked! One of my favorite B Foundation songs! Those lyrics, and just the kick ass surf rock mentality of it was all I needed to be satisfied with their 1o song set list :) Thankfully the show didn’t slow down after the hard hitting opener…followed by songs like “Rincon,” “Too Damn Tough,”  “Belly Floppin,” “Go Away” (surprisingly no mention of a Dirty J look-a-like), “Dirty Girls,” and last but not least (that I can remember a week after the fact at least) is the new song sure to be the next big hit for these guys! I present to you all a teaser of The B Foundation’s rocking new song “Indo Addict”:

Another catchy, heavily rocking tune sure to be stuck in every audience member’s head; “Indo Addict” is just too perfect! The perfect blend of some reggae hints and goodies, and then the hard hitting guitar riffs and bassline remind you that you are not at a Trevor Hall show….you’re at a FERAKING B FOUNDATION SHOW and things are going to get sweaty!

And now some pictures of my favorite rockstars, doing what they do best….rocking people’s socks off at SLObrew!

Pat in those sweet 70's threads, and Jason over in the corner...not a fan of the set up this night :(

Tyler...guitar hero solos for days!

<3 my boys :)

Let’s just say…SLO will never be the same after that show! I swear there was a pit almost the entire show, people got really into the “when your licking my ass…” take on “Too Damn Tough” and all of my begging and pleading for a ROCKING show was rewarded with the most epic set The B has yet to put on! I mean if you don’t believe me, I’m sure there’s video of Pat jumping into the pit during the other new punk rock song (sorry…didn’t catch that title) while Jason and Tyler provided us all with a raging awesome guitar and bass hero jam session! And to top it all off, as if it wasn’t already amazing, Emily and I got our onstage shout out before the boys whipped another oldie but goodie that we requested “Deerpark and Madison” <3 <3 <3!!! Just epic…really that is the only way I can describe SLO night one of B Foundation greatness (well I guess onsie pj, indo boarding “Obsessed With Success” karaoke party would also describe it…but you had to be there)

After the greatness of a “rage all night” show in SLO and a wake up call thanks to The B Foundation’s favorite song, “Obsessed With Success,” Emily and I were looking towards a night of sleep and relaxation…JUST KIDDING we were in Narnia, JUST KIDDING we were in New York, JUST KIDDING we were Hollywood bound! For realz, we were Hollywood bound thanks to a certain magical fairy that was able to sneak us in on a list so that we could spend our Sunday night raging and rocking out just one more time with these 4 wild and crazy kids.

But the best part of all of Hollywood, was a reunion with our buddy and merch man extraordinaire Dave Hawes (who some of you might recognize as the Cast Away Tom Hanks look-a-like from The B Foundation’s “Too Damn Tough” video!)

It was nice getting to see a second show, especially being able to see the 4 B Foundation boys crush a sold out show at the great Roxy venue…not as loud and crazy as the night before in SLO, but then I am a little biased since I had a little say in the epic greatness of SLO’s set list :) Here are a couple more pictures of my boys rocking the stage together for the last time! I know Joe Fikany Jr will be a great addition to the band for the Spring Harvest Tour and beyond, but for now…here are the O.G. warped tour brothers from another mother rocking it as always on the Roxy’s stage in front of a sold out crowd!

Jason getting the crowd pumped...well we were pumped!

"and Jason playing that fat bassline that we wrote!" ~ Deerpark and Madison...duh!

Well, I had more, but apparantly the uploader is having a bad day and doesn’t want to play nice with me…that’s ok, I finally got some good pictures of Jason at this show…and those two are probably the best/coolest :) Anywho…..

You can’t really complain about life when you are with your best friend (and future roomie!!!! AHHHH so excited) and you get to see faces that make you completely forget about the stress and yukiness of reality. So excuse while I light this spliff and thank my B Found Homies for their awesome-ness (yes that was a reference to “Spliffed”…don’t hate on my corniness!)

Jason, Pat, and Ian!!!! You three are beyond awesome :) I love all of our inside jokes and silliness, and want to say thanks for all of the silly memories that allow me to laugh when I feel like school has taken over my life and turned me into a sad little robot! I can’t wait to see what the Spring Harvest Tour has in store with the new guitar hero that I am sure will totally rock everyone’s socks off!  <3 all of your goof ball faces and think that we should have more Holdup Karaoke nights when you come through SLO :) See you soon!

Tyler…YOU ARE SO AWESOME! Hands down the coolest kid I have met in my entire life, and probably the best kickline dance partner with the sweetest crazy knees dance moves :) I know that nothing but good will come to you in the future and Emily and I will be sure to realize our Chubby Salamander Bar dream so that you can start  it off with a lovely acoustic diddy :) And I mean I will see you January 1, 2012 at 5pm in Sedona, Arizona for the wedding…hahahahaHAHA I mean I have to be there since you are marrying my best friend and roommate!

And last but not least on my thank you list for the epic weekend is my bFff and other half to the dynamic duo…EMILY!!!! You are the “Eh Brah” to my “Party”…you’re so dubby, and are the only other person on this earth that will delay answering a phone call just so we can sing out the song for half of the chorus! Thank you thank you thank you for being my driving buddy, raging buddy, and bestest of best buds for our epic weekend of no school talk and pure fun :) ps…SLO is nowhere near ready for us to dominate next year :) SO EXCITED!!!

NOW IN CONCLUSION for all that are probably gagging from my cheesy but necessary thank you’s….

“Music is the key to my soul, that’s why I’m breathing” and The B Foundation will forever be one of many bands to provide those tunes I turn to to remind me of silliness and good times :)

And if you have never heard of The B Foundation before or are thinking right now “man I want in on this awesome raging party of fun” come to a date near you on the upcoming Spring Harvest Tour! I’ll be in SLO and hope to see lots of fellow B Found maniacs there!!!!

click to enlarge or check em out at http://facebook.com/thebfoundation

Until the next time when they rock my socks off yet again…

and just in case The B Foundation needs their fix…here it is….try not to sing too loud hahaha
